Kathy helps providers interpret and comply with the various rules and regulations that apply to both individual and institutional health care providers, including federal and state fraud and abuse laws, federal Stark Law, certificate of need, corporate practice of medicine, and legal requirements for tax-exempt entities. She counsels on compliance plans, internal regulatory reviews and self-disclosures, and external regulatory investigations on both the state and federal level. She also works with institutional and individual clients on a variety of transactional and operational matters, including assisting with the negotiation and drafting of agreements (including employment, independent contractor, management, and other professional services agreements), assisting with professional licensing and accreditation issues, and advising on Medicare, Medicaid, and other health care payor reimbursement issues.
In addition, Kathy advises on the development of hospital and hospital-system policies. She is experienced in working with hospitals and their medical staffs in the areas of credentialing, governance and disciplinary matters, impaired health professional issues, risk management issues, patient rights issues, and bio-ethical issues.
Kathy combines a long-standing passion for the health care industry with her vast legal knowledge to advise hospitals, health systems, physician practices, and other health care providers across the health care spectrum. She frequently collaborates with the firm’s business services attorneys on general corporate matters related to health care and with litigators on health care-related litigation matters, including medical staff litigation and health care-related litigation brought by the government and/or qui tam whistleblowers.
A leader throughout her long career, Kathy has served in various leadership roles both within the firm and as its representative with professional organizations. She previously served as in-house counsel for a large health care system, an experience that enhanced her understanding of the business and management challenges hospitals face.
Outside of work, Kathy enjoys spending time with her family (especially at her family’s home in Door County, Wisconsin), reading, and traveling.
